I'm so excited to bring you a new series that I've been working on for
a few weeks now. I'm taking you inside of real weddings to hear the
scoop straight from the bride herself! The first installment of the
series introduces you to Elizabeth Markulin who married her sweetie
Mark DeStefano on May 30th, 2009 in Asbury Park, New Jersey. Liz came to me for wedding invitations way back in September. Using the Decadence theme from the Mew Paper Arts Studio, we also created coordinating thank you notes, programs, place cards and table numbers. Keep reading to learn more about Liz and Mark's big day! All images credited to David Lau Photography.
1. MPA: Introduce yourself and your groom--how did you meet, how long have you been together and what do you both do for a living.
Hi! My name is Liz, my husband's name is Mark, and we just tied the knot on May 30, 2009. We met at work 5 and a half years ago, while I was working as an engineer and he was the lab manager at a chemical plant. We went on our first date almost 4 years ago, after he wooed me
by bringing me yummy pastries to work and taking me out for happy hour margaritas. It didn't take him long to realize that cannoli's and margarita's are the way to my heart!
2. MPA: Was there a theme to your wedding? What were the major elements of inspiration for designing the event? Describe some of the décor and the space.
Sky blue is my favorite color, so I tied it in wherever I could, from the flowers to the stationery, to the vests and ties that the guys wore. Black, white and silver were used as accent colors. Flowers were very important to me in decorating the wedding. My bridesmaids wore black and I wanted flowers that popped against their dresses, so I went with a white and blue color palette for the flowers. We used ros es, calla lilies, lisianthus, hydrangea, and delphiniums throughout
the bouquets, centerpieces, and church flowers. The centerpieces were alternating high and low arrangements of hydrangeas and white roses, and the tall centerpieces each had a long calla lily in the base of the vase. The reception venue didn't need much additional decoration, it is a beautiful space with a wall of windows that overlook the gorgeous golf course. Having a venue with big windows and a beautiful view was one of our most important criteria when looking for a reception venue, so we didn't want the rest of the decor to take away from that.
3. MPA: What was the most memorable moment of your wedding day and what made it so?
There were so many memorable moments throughout the day. The best moment of the day was when my dad was walking me down the aisle towards my husband. The look on his face was one of such happiness, I will never forget that! But, the most special surprise of the day was a gift from my parents' friends... they took some beautiful photos of us at the church and had them printed and framed in the time between the church and reception, so we had wedding photos already at the reception! It was really sweet of them and all of the other guests, especially those that missed the church, loved seeing them.
4. Go ahead and give a shout out to one of your favorite vendors—(and no, it doesn't have to be Mew!) If you loved your cake, or your photographer, or your minister tell us why!
I really lucked out with some wonderful vendors, and didn't have one that I wouldn't recommend. But, I must say that for us, the most important vendor going into the wedding planning process was the photographer, and ours was amazing! David Lau, and his wife Amy, are an amazing husband/wife duo that I would highly recommend to anyone looking for a photo journalistic style wedding photographer.
5. MPA: Got any advice to new brides-to-be? Any tips on a fabulous place to get wedding shoes? An amazing harpist for the ceremony? Shortcut to getting all the bows on the favor bags tied in time?
There is lots of advice that I could give about not stressing too much about the details and making sure you enjoy yourself on your big day, but speaking of shoes, one thing that drove me crazy all day were my shoes! I bought beautiful Stuart Weitzman shoes (from Zappos) and while they were incredible comfortable all day, they were sling backs with a small buckle on the side... that buckle kept getting caught on the bottom of my dress all day. It was the most annoying part of the day and probably the only thing I would have done differently with the entire wedding would have been to wear shoes that didn't catch on the dress! The only other thing I would say is that if someone offers to help with anything wedding related, let them. I wouldn't have finished all my small last minute projects (like putting wraps on votive holders and tags on the favors) without the huge amount of help I had from some of my friends and my mother.
6. MPA: Tell us something quirky/fun/sweet/ridiculous about your new husband that nobody else knows. Maybe he always wears two pairs of socks at a time, like my husband.
Mark is a big primper when getting ready to go out somewhere nice. He takes longer to get ready than I do! He will usually go through several outfit changes, make sure the socks and shoes are just right, and that there isn't a wrinkle anywhere. He always looks good, but I
never would have thought I would be married someone who can be higher maintenance than me!
